Hello all! :D

I have news I am very excited to share – after months of being super busy and booked, I finally had time to redesign and start coding up the new version of CSSgirl – a version that I am completely satisfied with (wow!)! :D If you follow me on twitter, forrst or dribbble you have already seen a sneak peak of the new design. I’m very close to relaunching – not only with a new design, but with a whole slew of new content, resources and templates ready to go! Oh, and my favorite part? My online portfolio is finally finished and ready to share with you all.

So, keep your eyes open and watch out for the new CSSgirl to go live!

Cheers and Happy Holidays!

How to Drive from New York to China… according to Google :D

Ever wondered how long it would take you to drive from New York to China? Just ask google maps! Interesting bits are highlighted in the image with yellow.

How to Drive to China.... according to Google

I edited the image for size. :D

So, just in case you wanted to know, it will take 38 days and 17 hours in total to “drive” to China, from New York, NY. The total miles traveled: 12,207. Oh and you will have to kayak twice across the Pacific Ocean for a total of 6,636 miles (34 days and 5 hours) and jet ski for a total of 486 miles (13 hours and 2 minutes). You better be in tip-top shape.

I tried this with other countries (Ireland, Australia, Puerto Rico England, Russia, Mongolia, France, Greenland, Iceland, etc), but Google says it cannot find directions for those. The only other country I was able to make it work for was Japan, and the directions were similar. The walking directions are amusing as well.

Anyone else find anything like this?

Looking for a Full Time Dev/Design Job

After working for my company for over 2 years, they have decided they do not want me to work from home anymore and are offering me an ultimatum – come into the office 5 days a week, or they will “terminate my employment contract”.

Let me start by saying I don’t think this is a unfair request – they have a right to ask this of me, except, it’s one that I cannot fulfill without damaging my family.

When I started working for my company I pulled the normal hours required 9-6:30 in the office. I woke up at 5am, caught a train at 6:24am and was at my job by 8:30/9am. After over 9 hours in the office, I would catch a train back home, where I didn’t return until after 9pm most nights. After almost a year of commuting near 5 hours a day, and losing all time with my 3 children, I asked if I could work from home. They gave me a trial run, and since I was successful and just as productive as I was in the office, they allowed me to continue working from home as I have for over a year now.

And now, they have decided this isn’t in the cards for me anymore, and I have to come back to the office – or basically be fired.

There really is no choice here for me – choose between my work, and the job I have given countless hours of my life to- or spending time with my three children. I don’t want to be a weekend parent.

SO, that being said, I need a new job ASAP- working from home. I can commute to NYC 1-2 days a week if necessary. So if you are hiring, or know of someone who is, please contact me and I can share my portfolio, resume and any other pertinent information. I’d really like a full time gig, but I’d be just as happy freelancing as long as the work is steady (I’m a single mother – I still have to support my three children).

Dark Rainbow!

the cssgirl design

I want to thank each and every person who voted. It was very close at the end and Dark Rainbow beat out Whiteboard by just one vote!

Now, what happens next?

Well, I have taken all of the comments and suggestions you guys left in the comments and have been working on making Dark Rainbow easily work for everyone. Some noted that the light gray text on black background wasn’t enough contrast, so I’ve upped the contrast for better readability. I’ve made other minor design changes (organization of content), and will be launching CSSgirl on Dark Rainbow within the next two weeks!

What about the other themes?

Well, here’s the best news for those who voted for one of the three other themes: I’m converting each one of these to generic WordPress themes for free use! Those themes will be ready within the next month and I’ll make an announcement of where you can demo and download them.

Once again I appreciate all the votes and comments. :)
