Well, it’s about time isn’t it!

WordPress.com has announced that it is dropping support for IE6 due to the fact that “It has required increasingly complex code trickery to make the WordPress dashboard work in the IE6 browser, which was introduced 10 years ago and does not support current web standards”.

According to the WordPress.com article the WordPress interface will still load for IE6 users- but it won’t function that well. IE6 users will be warned of this change with hard to miss alert box with a red background.

The dropped IE6 support will also be reflected with the 3.2 update for self-hosted WordPress users. You can beta-test the 3.2 release now and help out with bug hunting.

WordPress 3.2 is expected to be released at the end of June with the dropped IE6 support, performance enhancements, “distraction free writing” and a facelift to the WordPress administration area.
