Yesterday Ben, from Binary Moon, released a new plugin that allows you to modify your WordPress login screen without worrying about it being being overwritten by future WordPress updates. This got me thinking about my very favorite adminstrative WordPress plugins that make my life easier when using WordPress. These are plugins I have used or want to use that focus on things like making the admin panel more friendly, that help organize and customize advertising, block spam, gather information, and more.

Darren Hoyt has written an amazing, concise and easy to read WordPress “tutorial” on using the template tags to customize your WordPress theme in creative ways to achieve the layout you desire – in this case a magazine style layout.
Before reading it will help if you have a familiarity with WordPress of course, but I think anyone who’s just dipped their toes in a WordPress template will be able to understand and use this article to stretch their imagination to create a complex theme.
(Don’t miss the first part of these great series!)
So, some immature kid from Turkey with the inability to speak any type of decent English hacked the CSSremix site. Not sure what is ever gained by doing this. Wow, you managed to poke and expose a security hole. Instead of destroying someone’s hard work why not give them a heads up instead of sticking some absolutely n00bish “hacked by” page, declaring how great you are (not!).
Hopefully the owner of the Remix has been making backups and can resolve this issue with little problem.
Does your website still look like it was designed in the late 90s? Are you unhappy with the current design of your site? Or does it just need a simple face lift? The “I Need a New Design” contest is for you then. lifeBLUE is offering the winner of their contest a completely free redesign. All you have to do is submit your site and then have friends, family – anyone, vote your site up. The site with the most votes wins.
Currently though, the number one site is “reviewback.com” (which compared to some of the other sites isn’t THAT bad) with a lead of over 600 more votes than the second place person. I’m thinking that there may be some shady practices at work, considering this notice on the site:
We are having to deal with BOTS or Automated Scripts submitting SPAM VOTES to the contest. Over the next 24-48 hours all SPAM VOTES will be removed and your place in the contest will return to its rightful position. We will continue to work hard to maintain the integrity of the contest.
Otherwise the votes are pretty close, so take a look and throw your site into the mix if you think you’d like a new design – what could it hurt?! Hurry though voting ends August 8th!
In no particular order – these are
tenthirteen (of a very long list) of my very favorite underrated (underused?) WordPress Plugins.
